No More Slums, No More Violence, No More Poverty

Cafe Soul

Cafe Soul took place Friday evening, September 9, at St. Francis of Assisi parish. Performers from groups such as LYTEhouse, Arise, IXD, and Philtered soul came to play inorder to raise money for the GK777 benefit event for the people of the Philippines. GK stands for Gawad Kalinga which means, "to give care." The number 777 is their goal to build 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities, in 7 years for the people trapped in poverty and live in slums. This model that they have created is so successful that the United Nations is studying it to bring it to other 3rd world countries to shelter the homelessand give dignity back to the people who have lost it. No more slums, No more violence, No more poverty for more information please visit http://www.gawadkalinga.org/E-mail: Lytehouseministry@yahoo.com

"Conference attendees listen to the Scripture at the Prayer Service at the NACDGLM Conference held on Sept 22-25 at the hilton Hotel in doentown San Jose."

I attended the National Association of Catholic Diocesan Gay and Lesbian Ministries conference hosted by the Diocese of San Jose, Friday and Saturday September 23-24. In my years of Youth Ministry and Catechetical work, I have known many young people who need a safe place where they can ask questions and discuss issues regarding sexual orientation. We as Church leaders need to address the reality that young people everywhere and in our church need to ask these important questions that are encompassed within any discussion regarding their giftedness, talents, and their identity as Catholic youth. My experience at this conference was very positive and I learned a lot about our brothers and sisters of this community.

Pastor-Youth Ministry Day at Presentation High School

Every year in September, Presentation High School invites pastors, priests and youth ministry coordinators to come to the school for a liturgy with the entire student body followed by parish -Youth conversations between the girls and the pastors and Youth ministry coordinators of thie parishes. My first expereince with this event was in 2003, my first month on the job. I was overwhelmed by the earnestness and faith commitment of the young women , many of whom were commissioned as eucharistic ministers and lectors during the liturgy. Bishop PJ always comes and we engage in conversation with the young women about their faith, life and school. This year Marian Stuckey, Superintendant of the Catholic Schools for the Diocese, also participated.
