Be the Change You Wish to See in the World.....

“Be the Change”Holy Spirit’s Re-usable Grocery Bags

Join our community’s partnership by making a commitment to care for God’s Creation.

Start using these re-usable grocery bags in place of paper and plastic bags. The bags are sturdy, lightweight and washable with a stabilized base and two comfortable handles. Storage is easy because they lay flat! Holy Spirit is making these environmentally friendly bags available at a cost of $2.50 a bag.

Get your supply at weekend mass. Bags will be on sale after all masses for the next 3 weekends or until our initial supply is gone. Please contact Barbara Kelly-Pedersen @ 293-8062 with questions.

Feb 19--Living Out Loud....Theology on Tap with Fr. Brendan McGuire or LOL...TOT with FBM

Fr. Brendan McGuire had much to say about Catholic Social Justice teaching as the lived sign of our Christianity as we live in this fast paced, intense, rapidly evolving technological hotbed of the world--Silicon Valley...

Fr. Brendan's conversion story regarding catholic social justice teaching was inspiring.
He said that he had been critiqued as not preaching enough on justice. He felt that he needed to understand the Church's teachings on social justice from a personal point of view before he felt ready to preach about it. He did this through a kind of "examination of conscience" and through this understanding was able to make some significant changes in his life and actions.

Some changes: -no more shopping at Wal-Mart which does not treat its workers with
justice
-no need to purchase more than he needs
-being conscious that some of what he wears and owns may have been
made with the sweat of people working in slave-labor conditions

Feb 17-18--The Youth Ministry Internship Coop Training Experience

"The Youth Minitry Internship Coop provides professional youth ministry training for Young Adults ages 20-39, who are engaged in paris youth ministry programs that serve multi-ethnic and socio-economically diverse Catholics in order to strengthen and expand the Church's outreach to these underserved youth."

Over 30 interns in training have been participating in the intense training provided by the member parishes of this deanery since August 2005. This past weekend, the group trained Friday through Saturday evening. The training focus was on multi-culturalism and evangelization for youth provided by Marcos Martinez of MACC, the Mexican-American Cultural Center out of San Antonio; and Catholic Social Teaching and faith presentation for adolescents provided by CST specialist Sean Lansing from the Center for Ministry Development. I learned so much on Friday evening in a simple exercise that Marcos led us through. Sean is absolutely passionate about his love for Catholic Social Justice Teaching. I have personally learned more about CST from the passion of the people who work in this ministry than any methodology or text I have ever read, and Sean is no exception!

The following photos are of this diverse group of young adults whom I worked with and learned so much with this past weekend. Best Practice at its Best!!!!!

Feb 18--We gather around the table for a blessing before lunch on Saturday

Feb 18--Marcos Martinez from the MACC Organization

Marcos shared some great definitions of the following terms:

Ethnocentrism: a room full of mirrors--the assumption that one's cultural view is central to all reality...

Ethnorelativism: a room full of doors--cultures are relative to each other...

Culture is the Collective Soul of a People: a gift handed down to us by our ancestors...

Culture encompasses how and who we are, how we think of family, how we celebrate, what we eat, how we eat...

Culture is our inner clock--how we communicate, how we relate, what we believe, how we feel about God...

Culture can be compared to an iceberg...
the tip of the iceberg is the external cultural comprised of our behaviors, dress, customs, language, foods;
the iceberg below the surface is much more massive and comprised of our attitudes, values, mindsets, thought patterns, perceptions, myths...
